Today’s writing prompt is going to be unique. I am not going to set limits of what words you can use or how long it has to be. Neither will I give you a starting sentence. No, today is about upholding a nearly forgotten tradition. Long ago, stories were told on Christmas Eve. Not just any sort of story, but ghost stories. Only two tiny fragments of this are retained in common knowledge.
The first of these is the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. The second is a single line in the song, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Very few people remember any other remnant of this tradition. If you are curious about the matter, there are a few sites that discuss the matter. One of them is found at Telling ghost stories is a lost tradition on Christmas Eve and is a fairly good overview of the reasons why it existed in the first place and some more interesting related facts.
So today’s prompt is to write a ghost or scary story relating to Christmas. The two most common sorts of Christmas ghost stories are either humorous or have a spiritual/moral aspect to them. This is something to bear in mind, but is not a requirement. I will also be working on this prompt and will post at least one Christmas ghost story in the coming weeks. If I get so inspired, I may do more than one. Enjoy the seasonal twist.
